review 1: I loved this book so much! Love the whole love story of Sophie and Gabe. I love how it all developed, how Gabe so intent on proving to his brother and family that he could be a hero and rescue his brothers betrothed and bringing her to him while he lay in bed with a broken leg, but instead not only saving Sophie from her evil stepmother but also falling deeply in love with her and becoming more responsible and growing up. Sophie, living as an orphaned scullery maid for an evil mistress were not only she but all are treated cruel, has no hope of ever escaping. That is until Gabe shows up on her life and she finds out the truth of where she comes from. She manages to escape with the help of the huntsman and Gabe where they find there way to the seven dwarfs. I really enjoyed... more reading this book and love this retelling of an old classic like Snow White and the author did a great job with this story. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read with love, evil, good, betrayal, adventure, and more.
review 2: The Fairest Beauty by Melanie DickersonGenre: YA, fairy tale retelling, historical fictionPublished on December 5, 2012Published by ZondervanPages: 352Read From: 4.23.14 - 5.1.14So, I'm two chapters in and I already have some critics. Bad author, bad editing? There was a writing and editing mistake that i found to be hilarious. Please, better editing!!! Okay, finished the book, and these are my thoughts.Cover Blurb: Gorgeous! And I have drawn it multiple times already. But, please, they really shouldn't have copied Disney's Snow White colour schemes!?What I Liked: I liked the Cottage of Seven. They were a little too annoying and cutesy sometimes, but overall, they were creative. I also liked Sophie’s dad and Gabe’s mother. What I Disliked: Almost everything…. Writing Style: Writing: gross! It really doesn't flow very well. I also think the story would have been better if it was in one person's point of view. Or maybe just Sophie's and Gabe's. We are told straight out not to trust the Huntsman because the Duchess commands him to take Sophie to the forest and kill her. We could have trusted Huntsman and really been taken with him. But since we know he's a lying jerk, we don't get fooled and the author isn't cleaver. *Sigh* Characters: Gabe: the author tells us one thing about him and next has him something completely different. His thoughts don't match up with his actions. He's described as never training as a knight. He also plays the lute and writes songs. Aw, he's a very sweet prince, quite opposite from his brother, right? Wrong. Then he implies that he does some [mildly] naughty things that he's glad his parents don't know. (Likely not with women, btw). Also, he flirts with girls. Not sweet! He's also overly confident with himself. So why has he never trained to be a knight when all his characteristics are jerkish?! Sophie: A little too perfect. Someone already noted that but said that's kind of how the Snow White story goes. I agree. But, it's still a little annoying. In the end, I really didn’t care about her. And, she’s the main character!? *grrr* Charming Huntsman: not so charming. Evil Duchess: Two chapters in and when I finished the book, I was not scared of the Evil Duchess. I don't know if that's because it's Christian Fiction for teens? Or the author just couldn't get her to be scary enough. But she's really stupid. Killing people just because she doesn't like them? Deeper, please? She was very weak. She didn’t have any reason to keep Sophie alive. The Romance: frustrating. I didn’t like any of it. (I usually love a really beautiful romance. Especially fairy tale one.) Believability: akh! It was so forced. The Christianity in it was so forced. Just read the Bible instead of trying to read these terrible Christian fiction. If you have read a really well written or great story by a Christian author, please comment! Conclusion: Hmmmm, I hated this book for most of the time that I read it. But, very much like watching a “Love Comes Softly” Hallmark movie, my heart was warmed in the end and was even curious about what happened in the companion novel. So, not really worth your time! Go find a better fairy tale/fairy tale retelling! If you like the Snow White story, try “Fairest” by Gail Carson Levine. Recommended Audience: 14 and up Companion Novels: “The Healer's Apprentice” (About Gabe’s mother) and “The Captive Maiden” (about what happens to Valten after Gabe marries Sophie), and "The Princess Spy" (About Gabe's sister) less
