review 1: I was disappointed. Melissa Anderson seems like a lovely person, but this book simply did not hold my interest as I expected it to. Much too much of the book (more than half) consists of "Little House on the Prairie" episode recaps, which is presumably redundant for most readers of this book. The brief glimpses into what was happening behind the scenes and Anderson's personal responses to the episodes are interesting, but even these sections of the book were inhibited by her reticence and great natural reserve. Moments of humor break in, but they are somewhat awkward on the page, and mostly the stylistic tone is stiff and stilted. There also many sections of the book that read as a screen-play, no doubt owing to the influence of Anderson's screenwriter husband, who (accord... moreing to her acknowledgments) assisted with the typing of her manuscript. At first this struck me as cute, but overall I think more traditional narration would have worked better, especially since the episode recaps and written straight and it is the real-life remembrances that are written as a scene. This has a confusing effect, blurring the lines between reality and fiction, which Anderson seems uncomfortable with, but which is further enhanced by her habit of referring to the character Mary in the episode recaps as "I" and "me." I admired Anderson's professionalism, as well as her ability to avoid the pit-falls of celebrity life, and her respected her decision to retire from show business to dedicate her time and attention to her children. She seems a charming person and admirable person, I really wanted to enjoy this book more.
review 2: This memoir is completely trashed in the reviews. I thought this was far better than Half-pint's book. I think Melissa Anderson keeps private what she wishes to keep private and comments only on her acting experiences. That certainly is her prerogative. I thought she was gracious and respected the privacy of others; unlike Half-pint. I enjoy this book much more than Half-pint's. They are a great contrast between normal life and what stardom and growing up in a Hollywood setting does to children. less

A little boring and hard to finish. Confessions of a Prairie Bitch was so much better.

I enjoyed looking back on one of my grandmother's favourite shows.
