review 1: A good solid knitting book, with practical discussion and illustrative patterns. The discussion portion is a good blend of pragmatic and inspirational. It ranges from an overview of color theory and suggestions to find pleasing color combinations, to recommendations for tracking owned yarns and keeping stored yarn safe from sun damage and pests. All of it was pleasantly conversational, and encourages the reader to experiment. The patterns presented a good mix of different palettes and techniques to combine different colors and yarns. The yardage information is uncommonly detailed--both overall yardage (not "2 skeins") used for each color in each size, and often the yardage in one row/round/stripe. This will help knitters be sure whether a specific leftover yarn is sufficient... more, and make it easier to plan for modifications like a longer/shorter item or more/fewer/differently proportioned colors.
review 2: Ignore the fact that for some reason they decided to put the ugliest design in the book (dig the bobbles on that sweater!) on the cover: this is a lovely book. (And most of the designs are great.)But don't pick it up for the designs, cute as they are. Pick it up for the information.Anyone who knits or crochets is going to have a growing collection of the odd ball or half ball of yarn, leftovers from old projects. What do you do with them? Stash-bust! This book has an incredibly educational first section full of information on how to use different yarns together, including a chart on combining thinner yarns to get thicker ones (e.g., how many strands of fingering you need to work together in order to get a worsted), info on how to launder yarns made of different fibers, a great section on color theory, and much more.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this *and* learned a lot. Great book! less
