review 1: An incredibly well researched, enjoyable book that will forever change how you think about words. The main thesis as expressed in the title, is that most bad words derive either from sacrilegious roots, or bodily functions. We learn that crude words in Latin have become high brow clean words of choice.I love how Ms Mohr is not afraid to say anything. Even her final discussion of that famous derogatory term for people of color is intelligent and challenging.Bad words depend on class, tradition, and intent. But they are a necessary outlet.Go ahead and read the book, it's just great.
review 2: Interesting look at the history of bad words...what they are, why we use them, and how things have changed over the years. Even a little bit of science of bad words. There ar
... moree two kinds of 'bad words' -- oaths, which started as oaths to God (holy) and sexual and body productions (sh*t). During different times in history, one was worse than the other...one had more power...one was more shocking. From the Old Testament to Lenny Bruce and George Carlin...from oaths, and sexual bad words to racial epithets...Mohr takes us on a journey of discovery. less

A moderately interesting, if maybe using swear words a bit gratuitously, history of our language.
