review 1: This was a fun little story, and my introduction to Ms. Brook's writing. The world in interesting, although perhaps not as well explained in this novella as it will be in a full-length story. My biggest problem with it is the Inspector, who is apparently featured in other parts of the series. I don't like her. Presumably she's supposed to be all that, but she's just as wrong in her stereotyping and judgments as those she accuses of being the same. Ugh. So we'll have to see if I can actually get through the stories that feature her. I quite liked Temperance and Newberry, however.ETA: Just read a plot synopsis of the first full-length story in the series that will keep me from reading it. So apparently I'm done with this series very nearly as quickly as I starte... mored it.
review 2: OK. This is super-short, but oh-so good. This is really a prequel to The Iron Duke, as it is the origin story on Mina's partner Newberry and his wife Temperance. (BTW, If you haven't read The Iron Duke, you may be a little lost in the world-building, but the love story will hold up.)I really enjoyed this. Basically, Newberry forced a dying Temperance into marriage after a gentle two year friendship. His only motivation was to save her life, but she thinks it was to steal her inheritance. The story follows the series of events that shows her how wrong she was.Newberry is a loveable gentle giant. And a virgin! I loved how he blushed and how innocent and sweet he was. I got so involved in the story, it was over before I knew it. It somehow left me satisfied and wanting more at the same time. Very good.Rating: A less

An enthralling little short read. Recommended if you're looking to get into the Iron Seas series.

A short, sweet story set in the IRON SEAS universe. Seemed a bit rushed towards the end.
