review 1: Written in reaction to a homophobic piece Merle Miller offers his experience and view on what it means to be a homosexual. This is the book form of his magazine article. It is interesting, but I found the afterword to bring up more questions that is applicable to a modern reader. For example, a younger homosexual told Miller that what Miller’s meaning on being a homosexual is different from his meaning. That does mean Miller’s view is only applicable to homosexuals raised before 1960? Maybe. It seems to reflect the typical picture of what homosexuals faced in the 1950s and 1960s as pictured in contemporary films and books. Does this mean that Miller’s work is not important in the LGBT movement? No, it got the question of the rights of homosexuals into discussions of ... morehomes where it probably never would have before.
review 2: Every baby gay read this (and straight people too), and reflect on the ghost of gay liberation past (know your history, girl). There may indeed be closets and bullies and asshats like Justice Scalia and mean crazies like the Westboro Baptists. But it does indeed get better, and Merle Miller reminds everyone of that not so distance time (in the grand drama of history) when being in the closet wasn't a personal choice but a necessity, and when publicly coming out wasn't a big deal - it was enormous. Thank the gay gods for people like Merle Miller and all those who came before, who paved the yellow brick road. less
