review 1: I was about to give up earlier, but I steeled myself and plowed through it. Unfortunately, now the same problem resurfaces: Zander's POV, which ruined this book for me. Compared to Nate or Casey's POV, the way Zander writes and the way he acts doesn't quite line up. He's writing in an intelligent and mature (if not TMI) manner while acting like a brainless jock, and while I understand that there may be some discrepancy between his thoughts and his actions - after all, he is a popular guy and afraid of social backlash - it was just too much for me. He's always lamenting in writing about how he's too weak to stand up for what's right and how guilty he feels for doing nothing to protect the bullied, but I mean, come on! As Nike's slogan goes, just do it! It's not like he's ph... moreysically incapable of helping others. I felt like throttling him...DNF at 58%
review 2: 4.5 out of 5Us Three is about three seemingly very different boys thrown together to do a class project. Casey is a sweet, smart, and a bit naive boy who is the target of much cruel physical and emotional abuse by a group of girls. Nate is the big brute that everyone ignores. His family life is awful, as he tries to protect his younger sister and himself from an abusive uncle. Zander is the jock, who is popular among the 'in' crowd but he feels different. Though he doesn't have an abusive parent, he is neglected, his mother is always absent and his trusted older brother is in college. The story is uniquely told in three POV's-Casey in first person, Nate through journal entries, and Zander through his emails to his older brother. Even though we get a glimpse into Nate and Zander's perspectives, this really is Casey's story. The bullying Casey endures is heartbreaking. The slowly developed friendship that becomes more was handled beautifully. Even though the main obstacle was stopping the bullying and helping Casey heal, both Nate and Zander grew personally too. Nate discovers that he is worthy of so much more and that others value his insights. Zander discovers that he can make a difference. I was skeptical about a ménage in a YA, but Ms Kerick handled it well. I thought that their relationship was realistic and organic. My only gripe is the school's ineptness in handling the bullying. As observant as the French teacher was in putting the three boys together for the project, she missed much that was happening in the classroom.I look forward to the next book! less
