review 1: Definitely one of the most original reads I've had in quite awhile :-)Our narrator is a man of mystery returning to a city he left 20 years ago. In the first few pages, he finds out he has a kid...and that the city he left has definitely changed. Not sure what else to say other than: I LOVE THIS BOOKOur man of mystery is cocky, but a decent man. He wants to make things right and that's the story...redemption. Stackpole does it with great storytelling and really good character development."In Hero Years...I'm Dead" blends our love of super hero archetypes and makes really great social commentary in a bigger than life metropolis. I have the deluxe edition, but you don't have to get that. The story is worth it on it's own. If you want to read something that you'll find y... moreourself recommending to everyone you meet...this is the book!
review 2: There is a lot to like about this book. Interesting characters. Nods to the comic book heroes. An overall strong plot with twist. A unique take on a superhero world, even if a little unbelievable, it fits the comic book style. Good, clear writing. Minimal typos (I noticed only two).So why 3 stars? Mainly because the first third to half the book reads like someone who isn't sure where the story is going, and is burning time with lots of internal dialog, often over things you think, "Do I really care about this?" I was getting bored with it after the newness wore off, and nearly put it down.Thankfully I didn't, because it finally zeroed in on a conflict and started building. The story gets complicated, but it all comes together in an ending with some satisfying twists. If the whole novel had been like that, I'd rate this higher. If you like deep world building and lots of set up time, you'll like this novel. If you can put up with a slow build through the first half of the novel, you'll probably find the second half worth the wait. What happens in the first half does tie into the plot, it just doesn't look like it will. If you go into it knowing that, you'll be fine. If you're expecting heavy hero/villain conflict from the get go, you'll likely put it down before you get that far. less

It's slow-going and not that of a new look on the old themes, but worth the read.

An enjoyable, clever novel about superheroes, villains, and the line between.
