review 1: A very interesting, though slightly grisly read. I really enjoyed the content of this book. What bothered me most, though, was the literary style. At times, chapters sounded disjointed from one other, as if the author started many different ones at the same time and decided to keep all of them in the book. The same thing applied with character descriptions, and it felt like Fleisher, Bender and Walter were constantly being re-introduced sometimes. The style in which this book was written definitely did not agree with me (it felt a little too 'try-hard') but overall I thought that it was quite an enjoyable and insightful read into the deep and dark world of murder investigations.
review 2: Like so many others, I found the cases and people interesting. I think w
... morehat the VSM do is very important. But..it was so disjointed. And repetitive. Capuzzo kept mentioning the Boy in the Box, as if he was going to give us new information (which he finally did. I think.) And he kept describing Frank's love life, as if we hadn't read about it in an earlier chapter. It was like watching Entertainment Tonight, where they repeat what they are going to tell us over and over - and finally give us one more sentence of information at the very end. (No, I don't watch it, anymore.) My biggest beef, though, is that we never really found out who the Boy in the Box was. Did we?? Who sold him to the other family? How did he get killed? Was it a crime of opportunity because the Peeping Tom found him in the box and he wasn't quite dead? Because, obviously, the woman who kept the boy was a monster, even if she didn't deliver the final blow. less

Fantastic look at the Vidocq Society, its founders and the cold cases they have helped solve.

Loved the subject, but as others have written this needed tighter editing.

One character and his insights made it worthwhile for me to have read it.
