review 1: I liked this book, once i started i couldn't put it down.This was so much better than the first one.The world building feels like this could become an epic set of books maybe like Raymond Feist's books and span generations, the only thing i want is as much as i like the 2 main characters all the rest feel a little boring like the author has poured all the personality into the 2.I want more, i'm just about to start the third and i can't wait.
review 2: It’s getting so much better. In his Acknowledgements Michael G. Manning mentions the death of his real life father and how this reflects in the way he wrote the second half of the novel, and even without him telling me this you can really sense a change in mood. The tone of this second instalment from the Magebo... morern series is a lot darker, the main character Mort now has a lot of adult issues to deal with, and a lot of personal heartache to tend to while fighting a war. The battle scenes were very engaging this time round, and the death of his father in the novel brought me to actual tears – which not many books have been able to do recently. You can sense Mort’s heartache, pain and personal destruction throughout the second half of the story, he doesn’t even have to point it out. The story is no longer the slight piss-take that it seemed to be in the first instalment. The sex jokes, swearing, bitching and sarcastic jokes had subsided (but gladly not completed erased) and overall it felt like a much more mature fantasy novel.I particularly enjoyed learning more about the lore of magic in this world. It was done more subtly than in the first book which I thought was a great improvement, it became incorporated in to the story rather than awkwardly placed on at the beginning of each chapter. Manning is starting to create a world rather than a short story. To improve upon the maturity and the back story I would personally advise him to make the “villains” a lot darker and more complex. While in a short story he may not have time to, I only had a shred of fear for the opposing side in the first few chapters involving the “undead”. The scenes between Mort and the evil characters need to be longer and more indepth, they are still rushed and quickly forgotten, focusing more on how he and his friends save the day than the actual story. I still also feel that the relationships and conversations between characters are too jokey and juvenile, even during the most profound moments somehow Mort and Penny rush through the serious and make a joke towards each other instead, which ruins the intensity of the moment. Overall I am impressed with the tone of the second book, I think if Manning continues to improve his skills into the next instalment number 3 could be quite great. I am really looking forward to it. less

This book was just as, if not more so, addicting than the first one. The roller coaster of emotion between Mordecai and Penelope gets a bit much at times, but hey, young love. It's probably a fairly accurate portrayal of how two teenagers in love and under that kind of stress would be. There is plenty of action in this book, and sarcastic humor abounds. Read: warning to those readers that don't appreciate that sort of humor. One thing I like about this story is that the protagonists aren't always making the most ignorant decisions possible (from the readers viewpoint), as is sometimes the case. Every time a moment of decision arises, I find myself cringing inwardly, waiting for the hammer to fall, but it only occasionally does, and even then, their mistakes are often rectified.The biggest reason I like this story isn't anything specific though, it is just a good, entertaining fantasy read. With all the competition out there, sometimes it seems to me that authors are trying a little to hard to stand out from the crowd. There is nothing particularly unique about this story, but it remains eminently enjoyable none the less.
