review 1: Had to give up on this one at about the 25% markI hadn't read a Michael G Manning book before, and was wary about proceeding because of some of the negative things I had read about his Mageborn books. However, this one had more positive reviews. All I can say is, how bad must Mageborn be if the response to this is positive! It is written in such a childish manner, whilst tackling very adult content. However, the character's responses to the very serious issues that come up are totally not believable. Daniel turns into some kind of sex crazed maniac after he has been basically abused and manipulated into it in the first instance. He feels guilty about it, yet he continues to do it and begins to relish it.The final straw for me, was when Kate (who in the whole book is never bu... moreilt up as anything other than a nice, normal girl) reacts uncaringly that Daniel has just murdered another boy, even if it was to protect her. She then follows this up by brutally killing an unconscious man and thinking nothing of it - likening it to killing a chicken. These actions from both Daniel and Kate would have been acceptable if only they had been foreshadowed with past events, or if we had been given a glimpse of those parts of their character in the first part of the story. When we just go straight from 0 to crazy, it is completely jarring and throws you out of the story.
review 2: Wow what an absolutely brilliant book. Michael G Manning has such an engrossing way of telling a story and making you feel part of the characters. I was really sceptical and a little (okay a lot) worried when I read that this was going to be a darker novel compared to his previous series. Boy was I wrong! Yes it is dark but in a good way.I would not say you have to read the Mageborn series to follow this, but just read it because it is awesome! Read it now! This book and series is essentially a pre-pre-prequel to Mageborn. It shows how the line of Illeniel got started and presumably Illeniels doom. While the main character is flawed (very) I got to understand some of the decisions he made however unlikely. All I can say is I cannot wait for the next installement. less
