review 1: This is the best nonfiction book I have read in several years. It is packed with information, exhaustively researched and written with enough flair to not get boring. The structure is a little jumbled and sometimes the narrative goes off on tangents, but those are trifling complaints. This is a stellar work of investigative journalism that belongs in the pantheon of all-time great political nonfiction. And oh yeah, the stimulus worked.
review 2: I definitely learned some things and this book really achieved the goal of retelling extremely recent events in a way that makes you think about them ever so slightly differently. I think Grunwald is a great reporter and a good writer -- if he weren't, a book about the bureaucratic successes of the economic stimulus pac
... morekage known as the Recovery and Reinvestment Act would be much more difficult to digest. He does a good job of addressing the limitations of what made the stimulus less effective than it could have been. Overall, though, Grunwald boldly proclaims that the stimulus was the right thing to do, it was successful at many (though not all) of its aims, and it will be a lasting component of Obama's legacy. He makes the case, pretty well I might add, that Obama took action on a lot of things through the stimulus package that other presidents only promised to do. Still, I found some of his writing about women to be abrasive. (Do we still use the word "screeching" to describe Nancy Pelosi's voice? Really?) That probably knocked a star off for me. Read it if you're interested in what the lasting effects of the stimulus might be (i.e. probably a pretty hard-core politico), otherwise you might not want to bother. less
