The Dead of Night was my first introduction to Piper Blackwell’s world, and based on this one, I’m looking forward to seeing more. The story of two different crimes, set many years apart–one against the very young and one the very old–pulled me in until I had to finish the last section in one sitting so I could find out “whodunit.” Rabe keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, but also includes a lot of terrific character building, especially Piper, her father, and the quirky “Mark the Shark.” The characters were engaging and very real–I cared about what happened to them, which for me is one of the most important things in any kind of story. A great read!

Synopsis:
In a deceptively peaceful county, mysteries are numerous—and deadly…
It starts with a fierce thunderstorm. Rain drumming against the bluff, washing away the earth and the decades and bringing up a grisly secret someone tried to bury a long time ago. Sheriff Piper Blackwell stumbles on it during a clandestine meeting with an aging, paranoid veteran who believes spies dog him.
Putting a name to the skeleton on the bluff, and finding the thief robbing the old man of his life’s earnings, sends Piper delving into the tiny towns that dot her rural county and digging into pasts perhaps best left alone.
Uncovering fragments of Spencer County’s history could prove dangerous, as Piper and Chief Deputy Oren Rosenberg seek to unearth a truth someone wants to remain forever hidden.
And those spies the old man feared? They might be real. They might be dogging Piper now.
It started with a thunderstorm, but Piper aims to finish it and find justice.

She’s a former news reporter and news bureau chief who penned a true crime book with noted attorney F. Lee Bailey. Her genre writing includes military, science-fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, mystery, horror, and modern-day adventure. She shares her home with three dogs and a parrot.
Rabe teaches genre writing courses—at conventions, libraries, museums, and other interesting venues. Her hobbies include reading, role-playing games, visiting museums, tossing tennis balls to her cadre of dogs, and buying books to add to her growing stacks. She lives in central Illinois near three train tracks that provide “music” to type by.

In The Dead of Night, Jean Rabe gives us another compelling Piper Blackwell mystery. After a clandestine meeting with a grizzled WWII veteran “Mark the Shark,” also known as “Mr. Conspiracy,” Piper stumbles, literally, over the bones of a child.
