review 1: A wild mixture of steampunk and scifi, this tells two stories that at first have no relation to each other, but the stories are fun so you keep reading. The characters are fully-fleshed, quirky and the setting is vivid: 1779 British Sailing ship that also sails the stars using alchemy, and 2132 Mars with an international crew of space Marines and a private company of miners. Its about page 300 where the two stories come together with a bang and a stepped pyramid on Mars. How that comes about is wonderfully realized in both halves of the story. The second one is already out, The Enceladus Crisis, but after having exterminated (possibly) an ancient Martian Warlord with supermartian powers, what could the author do to top that? I will be reading the next one to find... more out.
review 2: Quite fun! We have a story set in two different dimensions. One is, more or less, our own in the future and set on a mining base on Mars. The other is set in a steampunk version of the late 1700s where, through alchemy, sailing ships fly through the ether from planet to planet and the American revolution is happening on Ganymede. Someone is stealing alchemical essences for some Great Work that threatens the existence of both dimensions. The steampunk chapters are a little slow out of the gate, but once everything gets going, the book becomes a compelling read, with plenty of twists and turns before a fine climax. The epilogue hints at a potential sequel. If it comes to pass, here's hoping it's at least as good as this book was. less
