review 1: A fine treatment of the second holocaust of WW II. I'm sure there are more in-depth studies available, but this book provides a good overview--focussing on the time from the start of the siege through the most desperate period of the crisis in the winter of '42. Jones shows how Stalin's purge of the Red Army's best officers and the utter incompetence of Leningrad's leaders made an awful situation even worse. If you are unfamiliar with this chapter of the eastern war, this is probably a fine introductory volume.
review 2: "Leningrad, State of Siege", Michael Jones. 2008. Almost every major city across America has constructed a museum or monument dedicated to the Holocaust. Indisputably the Jews suffered immensely during the second world war, but it was the s
... morelavic peoples who suffered the greatest, and who also probably fought the most desperately. The death toll in the Soviet Union alone reached nearly twenty four million. Venice of the North, beautiful St. Petersburg, one of the most culturally rich cities in all of Europe was besieged for nearly nine hundred days. By cutting off all food supplies to the city Hitler planned to exterminate the entire civilian population of three million. Michael Jones' book draws on diaries and eye witness accounts to describe the horrific conditions that civilians faced while living in a city slated for annihilation. The first hand accounts are often raw, visceral, resigning, yet the survivors through hope and compassion, persevere. I am continually set aghast when I contemplate the amount of suffering and death that Germany has been responsible for. Jones tells a story of humanity. Humanity that has been fractured, pulverized, disintegrated. "Leningrad, State of Siege" is a depressing book. -but a story that needs to be told, remembered, and justly memorialized. less
