review 1: Solid biography of Lee. Doesn't go into much detail of his extended family life other than highlights, but does seem to capture well a picture of the man behind the glorified historical personification. The wrestling with his purpose in his career field is something that I think would resonate with many. The truth then is keep striving for excellence, you never know when your time to be remarkable might come.
review 2: Very thorough review of Lee's life, from start to finish. This biography was enhanced by a expanding it beyond Lee to his most loyal subordinates...Stonewall Jackson and James Longstreet. The nuances of his interactions with these two giants of American military history in some ways make Lee seem bigger. However, his constant use of the phrase
... more "if practicable", rather than giving direct orders, clearly played a role in the Confederacy's defeat. The last years of Lee's life, though they spanned as long as the Civil War itself, are just glossed over by Korda...This hurt the overall narrative, because Lee did as much to bring the nation back together in the last five years of his life as he did to separate it (albeit reluctantly) in the previous five years. Overall, though, it was a very good project on a very important American personage. less
