review 1: Blah, blah, blah... the author uses the Michael Moore tactics of cherry-picking and deception to rebut any view of America that challenges his privileged status as a conservative Christian white male or that forces him to face the facts that American history has a dark side. There was some actual truth in there somewhere but it's buried deep and not worth the digging through massive amounts of propaganda and disinformation. The author would like to present an America that is pure and good and the best at everything but that just does not comport to reality. The truth is not as black and white as presented in this book; but just so many shades of gray.
review 2: If you're a conservative I think many of these arguments have been presented in other areas and wi
... moreth similar results (e.g. Thomas Sowell discusses many of the middle class "issues" in Economic Facts and Fallacies). What I found most interesting was the last chapter, many times, especially amongst certain types of conservatives (e.g. Michael Savage) often act as if we are in complete social decline something I often bristle against. Although I feel that there is some cultural decline, it is nothing new and it is more cyclical then a complete downward slope. I'm not a huge fan of Medved, but I think he has written a pretty straightforward history text that is a good counterbalance for what passes as conventional wisdom. less

It's like listening to a very long disagreement day, without the callers.
