One more book from my ‘I-kept-pushing-it-off’ pile, and once again one that I really enjoyed.
Ann Aguirre is one of my favorite authors. She doesn’t have the smoothest writing style, most of the time it takes me a lot more effort to get into her stories but still she has an edge that makes it all worth it. I would say that she has a pretty unique writing style.
The worldbuilding is interesting but not too detailed because it’s huge. The detailes concentrate more on the mechanism of the whole space traveling and jumping part. I liked how the world is structured, it reminded me a lot to a couple of my favorite sci-fi TV shows.
The plot is where my disapointment come in the picture. The whole thing is just not motivated enough, I would say the storyline is a it directionless if that make sense. I see what the characters are intending to do but they don’t have either the drive or anything heavier to push them in the right direction because its someone else dream that they are chasing.
So yes they jump all around and do interesting and eventful things which is great and entertaining but ther is no inner intesity to it at all. For me the story is missing the spark that makes it spectacular.
Other than the action part there is some romance to the plot too, but in my opinion at this moint its quite shallow and developes to quickly.
Sirantha, the main character is quite unconventional. Right until the accident in the beginning of the story she lived her life in a bubble, on a pedestal and she kinda didn’t know anything whats going on outside it. And she was okay with it, she had her adventures and got paid and nothing else mattered. Thats why when she gets out after the accident she has a hard timeto adjust and get her footing. However her circumstaces require her to adapt quickly. Her survival instict make her someone who is definitley not a hero because she gladly sacrifice anybody in the beginning as long as she gets out alive. She changes a lot during the story, thank god in the right dierction. She has a snarky, sullen humor.
We hurry onward trying to be quiet, altough skulking in a bright corridor with no cover looks even sillier than it sounds.
We need more speed, and it’s all I can do not to shake free of them, sprint for all I’m worth. They’re dragging me down, and right now I don’t even care whether they live or die. I’m not a fragging hero…… I didn’t ask for this. I shuldn’t have to choose.
The Corp led us believe we were the only source of trained jumpers. Of course they also had me thinking my shit didn’t stink.
March has a serious magnetism to him, and he is quick to attract Sirantha. But he has a sordid past and an animalistic side that he fights o keep at bay. Thats why he keeps his distance and comes off as a broody a**hole at times. Personally he was my favorite character among all of them,
The other secondary characters are not so detailed mainly because there are quite a gew of them dying rather quickly, but they are interesting addition to the story.
I liked this book it’s entertaining and engaging but at the same time it gets better as the series goes on.
