review 1: A few twists in this story that I didn't see coming but also a but if predictability as well. That didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story, though. The main story is set in a remote prison for the criminally insane. You get a little back story on some of the characters and others you are just introduced to their personality. There unfortunately are not many redeeming characters so when they die, you are not upset about it. In fact, there were times when I actually wished certain characters had a much more gruesome ending. Of course, there's a hint of blooming romantic involvement because what horror/thriller type doesn't have that? Most times that element makes me gag but thankfully the author kept that quite low on the scale and the thrilling horror on the high... more note (as it should be).
review 2: I described this book as a train wreck to my friend. Despite the mess, you just can't look away. That's the only reason I can explain why I made it all the way to end of this book. It was a mash up of things - Arkham Asylum, Hannibal Lector, and The Thing, primarily. It was full of stereotypes, like any number of B movies. We had the token black guy named Hip Hop, the shrink with a terrible past (who needed a shrink as much as any of his patients), the beautiful battered woman running from her past.. you get the idea. All of these folks get trapped, isolated in a privately-owned prision/asyslum, out in the middle of Montana, in the dead of winter, during a record breaking snow storm. The power goes out, the monster and crazy guy escape, and folks start dying. Weak writing, no real suspense and a anticlimatic ending force me give this book a rating of two stars. less

Unexpectedly science fiction when I expected horror. It was an okay read.
