review 1: A man unearths a lost gospel, one written by someone who actually knew Jesus and who witnessed the Crucifixion. However, what if that gospel contradicted what the New Testament tells us about the Death and Resurrection? What if the set of assumptions about Christianity were proven wrong. Faber's brief yet bitterly comic novel addresses that very situation, while taking on publishing, celebrity, and fanaticism. Worthy of the likes of William Golding, this is a thought provoking tale for our times.
review 2: I anticipated not enjoying this book due to some of the other reviews I saw on this site, but despite its flaws I really liked it. Of particular interest were the contents of the so-called Fifth Gospel, written by an actual eyewitness to the events describ... moreed, as opposed to the four known gospels, none of which were written by anyone who was there on the scene. Of course, in reality, there is no fifth gospel, but if there were and it matched the version here, I can easily imagine the ripples it would cause throughout Christianity. And though some in the book find the revelations destructive to their faith, they really needn't be perceived that way.So, in a way, this book is about the inelasticity of faith and the excessive trust people place in the familiar. The framing device, about how the papyri are discovered and then utilized, along with the events that befall their discoverer, is merely serviceable. But neither did it detract from my appreciation of the author's efforts.Finally, it's a very slight book and thus a quick read, so the investment of one's time is not excessive. less
