review 1: It's been a while since I've written a lengthy review, and this book has inspired that despite how harsh it may sound. I did enjoy the book. Keep that in mind while reading my review. The idea behind this story is a classic, likeable theme. Fantasy meets an urban setting. My favourite genre. The author tried hard to give us likeable, complex characters, and show us a good dynamic between them. They were definitely complex, however the execution wasn't as high as I would have liked. I didn't connect with any of them because of the rapid POV switching. Sometimes, the POV switched back a few moments in time and repeated the conversation from this POV. Now I understand that since the Twilight/Midnight Sun debacle readers are crazy with getting both POVs. Suddenly, they can dem... moreand that authors give them what they want, and authors give it to them. But... is this the right thing to do? In some situations, it really works if the 2nd POV is so drastically different from the 1st POV that we can't somehow deduce even close from the 1st POV on how the 2nd POV person feels. In this book's case, we didn't need to rehash the same conversation from another POV. It dulled the effect. Sometimes less and a little mystery is more. Give us something to crave. If we're given everything, I'm not really craving anything. Give me a small juicy steak, and I will crave a larger one. But... give me the larger one, and I won't be hungry anymore. (Sorry for the food analogy, I actually am hungry right now). Now this rehashing of the same POV did damage to another area of the story. Pacing. Since we already know how this conversation went, we aren't that excited to hear it a second time. So, the story slows down when we drag our eyes over the next words. My next point, plot. It felt all over the place, and wasn't really focused. For example, this one scene where they go grab a bite to eat at a diner, I didn't see how this pushed the plot forward. The scene felt very Bella Swan, with the waitress throwing herself at the male MC. The whole time I was thinking about Twilight instead of being inside the story. Sure, we get to see the MC get jealous and dig her claws out, but what was the point of this scene? What did we accomplish? What new goals were made? What problems were resolved? At least in Twilight the story takes a turn, finally revealing everything. But, here, nothing moved forward. It was kind of a filler scene. The beginning or more like the first 2/3rds of the book were very slow moving. The author needs to work on goals, problems, and resolution of each scene. The tighter the plotting becomes, the stronger the story becomes as well. The story only actually started moving in a solid direction near the end (last 1/5th of the book), at which point I think that should have been the halfway point. We finally land in the "fantasy" portion of the book. It was because of the last bit that I decided to read book 2. But I hope she's improved the problems I've listed above. Lastly, the world building was okay. With the fantasy genre, you need to be really careful to get the description right, and make sure the world building feels real. To me it just didn't get there. Despite all of this, I feel that this author has a lot of potential, and only time and practice will draw out her talent. After reading a couple other authors, I've seen their series progress from okay first 2 books to excellent 4th/5th books. Some of those were my favourite. It is for that reason, that I am not giving up hope on this author.I wouldn't decide to read the 2nd book if I didn't think there wasn't something there. Please keep writing and if you need more time to edit and go through your plotting, please do. If you need to set your book aside for a year, and then look at it fresh to see it from an objective perspective to look for problems, then yes, go for it. I'd rather wait for a better book (God knows I've waited 3 years for some books, but they were worth the wait), than read what you release under pressure to please impatient fans.
review 2: This book was ok. I never really got deeply into it, to be honest. The characters felt pretty basic and one dimensional and there was quite a bit of "I know I've kept you in the dark all your life and you want answers and I want to give them to, but first I have to do this" and then there are no answers. Xander is in love with Skye from the start and she feels an incredible connection to him and that's sort of explained, but it's still insta-love to me. We never saw what they found so incredible in each other that they were ready to die for one another and that's a huge pet peave for me. A love story should tell you the love story, not jump to the end where the jucy bits are.It was well written despite some odd formatting irregularities, but that easily could have been Kindle formatting glitches and nothing the author did wrong. All in all, I felt like it was just okay. less
