review 1: 3.5 stars, probably, but I rounded up because it got better towards the end. For me, this book lost a few points for predictability (I saw Juba coming from 200 pages away,) and felt as though the historical tidbits Moran was trying to include were inserted rather inelegantly, rather than the seemless way in which truly great historical fiction can do. However, I was definitely drawn into Selene's story, and felt that Moran did a great job of capturing her voice and creating a memorable character. It was also really cool to rea about the success she and Juba had later in life, and it made me happy for them, both the real people and their fictionalized versions. Ancient Rome was such a fascinating time filled with political scheming and back-stabbing, and I'm definitely inte... morerested in reading more about it.
review 2: I listened to this book, rather than read it. So I can't call it a page turner, but I did keep wanting to find out what happened next. I wasn't that familiar with the founding of Augustus's reign, so this taught me some new info. However, I couldn't help feeling like this book-ostensibly about Cleopatra's Daughter- was just like Indiana Jones. Whether she was there or did anything made absolutely no difference to the outcome of the story. So I'm not sure why she was the focus. less
