review 1: This story covers the last six years of Napoleon's reign. It's told in three voices - his second empress Marie Louise, his crazy sister Pauline, and Pauline's devoted chamberlain (who sees all). Marie Louise is portrayed as a talented, intelligent woman with a strong sense of integrity. Come to think of it, so is the chamberlain. The psychology of this book was interesting to me. The Bonaparte's as a family were incredibly ambitious, narcissistic, and rather crude.
review 2: Excellent! Michelle Moran does a fantastic job of telling the story of Marie-Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte's second wife. While Napolean loved Josephine, she failed to produce an heir so was divorced and sent off. Napolean then demanded 18 year oldAustrian princess Maria-Lucia as his wi... morefe, changed her name, and moved her to France to become the Second Empress and the mother of his child. I loved this look into that world and felt so much sympathy for poor Marie-Louise. less
