review 1: Lots of name-dropping, unnecessary cultural references, and general creepiness. It all felt pretty gimmicky, and I got the impression nobody involved really understood what being punk (or punk rock, for that matter) means. Surprisingly I was slightly more interested in the bandmates' cishet romance than I usually am, but I did lose interest in and respect for Reena when I found out she was a fan of Watchmen. That's just gross.
review 2: My second Jewish YA book for the year! The story's about Ari who starts up a band (called The Tribe) with his friends in their Jewish school to, in a nutshell, make sense of his life ~as a teen.~ On the way, he experiences rising to the level of 'cool,' trying to stand up for what he thinks he believes in and (I don't care how ... morecliche) learning things about himself he didn't know he had in him. It has the same flavor of any heartwarming coming-of-age story but has the added value of cleverly put-out graphic-novel pages. Sure, it's totally kosher but falls a bit behind... at least, for me. But maybe because I was reading it during my hell week at work. I might have to reread it sometime soon because I just know it deserves more than three stars. less
