review 1: I think this is a perfect penultimate chapter to this arc of Unwritten.Backstory is revealed in a really interesting way, Carey's meta meditations on the nature and consequence of stories seems less forced here, and we get a nice change of pace with a focus on a different era.Sorry if that sound's cryptic, but I want to avoid spoilers. If this series has not been your favorite up to this point, I will say this will not change your mind. But, really, if you're still sticking with it 5 volumes in, you should know what to expect. If I have one minor quibble, it is that the series seems to lack a "ticking clock" element or sense of urgency. This is an idea that has a finite arc; it can't be an open ended series. I don't know how Carey can effectively keep the story afloat withou... moret radical changes in course.
review 2: This volume was MUCH better than the previous one, and restored my hope in the series. I still feel like it is taking the characters too long to figure out what the reader already knows. I feel like this is becoming all set up and no action, how long does it take to set the stage!? I think that the author is trying to get deep and express BIG concepts but I feel like we are going in circles sometimes. That being said I really enjoyed the 1930's flashbacks and Pulp fiction feel! less

I liked the mechanism they came up with to show what happened in the past. An engaging volume.
