review 1: Poindexter Makes a Friend is a sweetly humorous, encouraging story for young elementary students. Poindexter is a shy pig who has not yet managed to come out of his shell despite plenty of opportunities to make friends. He is most comfortable reading aloud to his stuffed animals or helping the local librarian. Everything changes one day when he meets a shy turtle named Shelby at the library and both literally and figuratively helps him out of his shell. In a fun self-referential twist, Poindexter and Shelby make friends while reading a book on how to make friends. The book-within-the-book has excellent tips on being friendly that will be useful to shy young readers. The author, New Yorker cartoonist, Mike Twohy, tempers any preachiness with gentle humor, such as when Shelb... morey asks if it is OK to stop smiling. Poindexter ends up traveling full circle, back to his house to play with stuffed animals, but this time bringing his new friend along with him. The water color illustrations are bright and humorous, full of expressive critters that will captivate young readers. Librarians will enjoy the notion of the library as a place for social as well as intellectual discovery.
review 2: This is a sweet little story about shyness and friendship. However,I am deducting one star for the librarian (nice as she is)in cardigan, sensible shoes and glasses on a chain.I personally like cardigans(I wear them over the tank tops I wear for jumping around during story time)sensible shoes (I wear nothing but Reeboks and Crocs, but I've got flat feet) and my glasses(which I wear all the time, so I'd never use a chain). But they are stereotypes of librarians and didn't Nancy Pearl do enough damage with that blasted "action doll" that goes SHHH? less
