review 1: Miranda July, you've done it again. After I brought this ARC home, my fiancé read it and told me it HAD to be the next on my reading list. Usually, that makes me want to read a book less (why is that?), but I've read July in the past and wanted a unique read. This story is character driven. So much so that you end up forgetting there is an actual plot. Yet, you don't mind. I didn't. The style is very poetic, and it is so absurd that you have to stop and backtrack at least a few pages. Cheryl, the protagonist, is a middle-aged woman with a very unique mind. Often, I couldn't tell if the monologues were her thought processes or actual occurrences in the story, but that is a definite charm of the novel. I recommend this read for anyone searching for something unique, a lover... more of magical realism, or someone who wants to rethink whatever they've ever thought of the strange woman down the street. My only fear is that soon, I'll be very similar to Cheryl. We'll see
review 2: I rarely rate a book 1 star because I stop reading if it seems to be going in that direction. Only got through this one because the writing was pretty good, and the main character was sympathetic, and I wanted to see what would happen to her. BUT, it was not a pleasant experience. Usually quirky, mean, dysfunctional people are fun to read about. But these dysfunctions were not fun, not believable, and inconsistent, too. less
