review 1: This was the Miranda Kenneally book I've been waiting for. It's set after the first generation of Thousand Oaks kids have graduated from high school. There's a new class with a few familiar cameos scattered throughout. Kenneally shines when she's writing about the racing world. I loved hearing about Savannah's accomplishments on a horse, the intricacies and backstabbing involved in the racetrack politics, and Savannah's burgeoning friendships with people in her new environment. I really liked the protagonist. She had gumption, she went after what she wanted, but she wasn't an unrealistic depiction of a high schooler. The romance, of course, was a major element of the story, but it was the most subtle and in the background of Kenneally's series.
review 2: I was
... morereally disappointed in this book. I wanted to like it so bad because I love all the other books in the series, but this one just felt off. I'm not sure why but the story and the writing style really seems rushed and it felt like it was written by a different author completely. Disappointing, but didn't deter me from reading the newest book after this which I have to say is one of my favorites from the series, so it's good to know that even if I didn't love this book, the next book (breathe, Annie, breathe) was back up to the standards of the other books in the series. less
