review 1: While we American teenagers have our trashy YA paranormal romances to satisfy our cravings for a guilty pleasure, the Japanese teens have something called a light novel. There is just something I adore about Japanese light novels. After considerable thought, I've come to the conclusion that the difference between the typical YA romance and the typical light novel is that while the story almost always turns out lackluster in the YA romance, the story in the light novel is practically bursting with insane plot twists and creativity. While the YA author typically holds back, the LN author charges ahead with any and every crazy idea and melodramatic character that can dream up. This isn't always a good thing, but I definitely prefer the latter in this case. I'd rather have too... more much than not enough!Not to say that the LN genre doesn't have it's own cliches, just like the YA paranormal. It's just that these cliches are infinitely more interesting.Big YA Cliches:- Boring mary sue protag- Hot mysterious emo male paranormal creature- Love at first sight LN Cliches:- Cute-ish, sensitive boy meets other-wordly gorgeous girl- Lolita-esque secondary character- Every girl is gorgeous (except Ouran Host Club I suppose)- At least 1 or a combination of the following must occur: suicide, memory-erasing, parallel world hopping, ghost involvement, somebody turns out to be a robot/God/fae/etc, epic battles, long melodramatic monologues, homicide, etc etc. There are more but I can't really think right now lol. Now, which genre sounds more interesting to you? I love how these Light Novels also have very, very deep moments. It's not just a short fluff read. They have /substance/.
review 2: Yen Press did an amazing job of translating this light novel. The text is so much different from what you read in an American novel. The narration from Konoha makes the story what it is...so addicting. The bold font in some sections make the story a bit intriguing. It took me a while to realize who was talking in those parts. The mystery of Shuji kept me reading until the end. This book is amazing and the future novels get better and better. less
