review 1: The fifth book in Melanie Watt’s Scaredy Squirrel series, Scaredy Squirrel Has a Birthday Party, is quite similar to the third book, Scaredy Squirrel Goes to the Beach: Scaredy is quite certain that he would prefer to spend his birthday celebrations alone in the comfort and safety of his own tree, that he doesn’t want to venture down for a party where there would be raucous people, falling confetti, and loud music, just like how he doesn’t want to leave his tree to go to the beach, instead doing the solo thing at his own private homemade beach.I always find that I’m comparing myself to Scaredy–like him, I don’t like celebrating my birthday. I always think parties are too loud and too busy, and I’d much rather spend a quiet night in with my husband and my dogs... more. But sometimes, sometimes a party could be just what the doctor ordered! While Scaredy is planning his solo birthday party, he remembers his good ol’ pal Buddy that he met in the second book, Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend, and decides to invite him to the party. Scaredy makes up a plan for the party, with small talk ideas (do’s and don’t's), and gets all of the supplies together for the best birthday party. And what happens? Of course! Nothing goes according to plan and Buddy brings more dogs to the party than Scaredy can handle! Fortunately, everything works out and Scaredy changes his plan for the next year’s birthday, realizing that it wasn’t so bad sharing his special day with friends. This book, in particular, sends out a message to both younger children and older adults–even though we’re all getting a year older, there’s always someone who wants to celebrate with us!This is the last book in the series and I certainly hope that Melanie Watt keeps writing them. The stories, the illustrations, the humour–it’s all perfect and great for anyone to read. If you love books and aren’t afraid to read something that’s in the children’s section, you’ll love Melanie Watt.
review 2: I think Mélanie Watt is a genius. Both the Scaredy Squirrel books and her Chester books are inventive, witty, and completely charming. I think this series in particular is great for children who deal with a lot of anxiety and fears. This book was a complete hit with my 7 year old, my 2 year old, and me. What happens when our ever cautious squirrel gets more than he bargained for at his carefully planned birthday party? A lot of fun! less
