review 1: I generally enjoy YA books, and this is not the worse I have ever read. However it was remarkably uninteresting and with several big flaws, so I would recommend avoiding it. My main comments/critics are: (beware, spoilers)- the main character is 1) a poor orphan, honest and hard-working, please feel sorry for him, 2) the best. As a matter of fact he is the best at everything, and does not even need to learn, he is a natural. Can I punch his perfection in the face right now? I won't say he is a Mary Sue, but will think it. Flat characters do not allow me to like them.- the "bad guys": lamest back story ever: she was kidnapped and tortured and wants revenge. But not against the ones who tortured her (we wont know anything about them)....- common problem in YA fiction: the re... moresolution is rushed in the last 5 pages, leaving me frustrated. - humour: describing kids teasing each other may be fun to 8 year old kids. If you happen to be older, you will just be bored/depressed.Anyway... I may give the impression the book is terrible. It is not, it is readable, just lame.
review 2: Christopher Lane is awesome! This was a terrific read, Meyers Holt academy is so cool I want to go! Although this book has a "magical" school it is nothing like Harry Potter in any way. The Ability is actually believable in my opinion, I love the idea of using more than ten percent of our brains. Chris is a great character, his life situation is crap but then he gets a chance at something better, a chance that any kid would want. I would definitely recommend this book!! less
