review 1: this book definitely deserves 4 stars at least, its the sort where even after you finish reading the characters keep haunting you! Mohd Hanif did an excellent job from beginning to end showing us vices deep-rooted in pakistani society; religious intolerance, the economic-divide between the masses, basic ammenities such as health totally in shams, corrupt police officials and the plight of those trying to rectify the system ending up in real misery. This book is an eye-opener and even though the account is fictitious, it still comes across as the true story of so many people in pakistan.
review 2: Its a gripping read. You cannot leave it unfinished. It runs smooth and its satirical tone can still make you think. Its one of those few novels that are light, that y
... moreou cannot put them down and the book can still point out some sad facts. Though this book is about a lower caste christian nurse in Pakistan, it also points out the prejudices against many working women from lower castes across the world. The book is bold. It doesn't miss pointing out the prejudices of the state, police, Catholics, Muslims, men, single women, lower castes and readers. The author points out at the controversial sainthood bestowed on a polish nun ( and the Indian media conspicuously ignored it for very long ) and mix it with the story line and makes a satire out of it. I read of another author who could make a tasty cocktail of facts and story with such natural ease and a simple style- It was Salman Rushdie. The last chapter that deals with the beautification of the nurse seems a bit away from the natural and realistic tone the author has managed to carry till the end, but the very title of the book suggests beautification, so I cannot really complain. The author manages to to hush away my disappointment about the lost reality at the end with beautiful last lines, suggesting why the story begins the way it has begun. less

Mesmerizing. Witty. Heartbreaking. Cruel. Thoughtful. Thought provoking. Brilliant.

Grim. Just couldn't get into it properly. Liked it in bits and pieces.

Tragicomedy in the sense of 'sickeningly, absurdly hopeless'.
