review 1: This book was so sweet and light! However, the story isn't fluffy in a dismissive way - it's a definite coming-of-age tale that involves hard choices. Yet told so gently, it was easy to feel comforted even during the chapters with conflict. You just know that everything will work out in the end. The vocabulary and dialogue reflected the manners of the 1920s, with the focus on every proper word and refined behavior. BUT OH THE KISSING!
review 2: A few things I loved--I loved that the setting takes place in Minnesota, love the historical aspect from the 1920s, and I love that it touched on what I would call a modern theme (sexual preference identity) in a different context. And at first I also loved the use of the bird as a metaphor (a la Barbara Kingsolver
... more), but by the end the bird part felt a bit forced. Overall, a good YA book for teens. It's short, but meaty enough to feel good about counting it for free reading credit if need be. less

One of the greatest books I've ever read! The romance between Garnet and Isabella is beautiful.
A sweet little YA book set in Minnesota. The bird theme held it together well.
Birds of a feather flock together.
