review 1: It is an interesting story but for some reason the book did not hold my interest. One of the difficulties with this story the author acknowledges in the notes: none of the four thieves arrested for the theft of the necklace left any kind of written statement; they didn’t even testify in their defense at the trial. So the most compelling part of the story (how they planned the heist, what they were thinking and feeling) is not available to us.
review 2: The Great Pearl Heist is a great read. The heist itself is an incredible story that was, as the author explained, lost in history with the advent of the World War I. But the book does much more than tell that story; it also develops the story of pearls, the rise of detectives, and life in England at the turn of... more the century. The "trial of the century" was a bit of an anticlimax with a little too much treatment given the actual content. But this is a fascinating story, quite well told. less
