review 1: An interesting book following a group of women in their 40's and what it means to have children, want children but not be able to have them and not want children. The women have totally different viewpoints but are firm friends and that really is the whole story. I normally enjoy books like this - and I did enjoy this one - I just felt that it was too slow. Every time we switched to zoo chicks chapter I groaned inwardly as there would be so much extra wordage crammed in. Some aggressive editing and this could have been an easy 4.
review 2: The beauty of The Stud Book is in the questions it asks but can't answer, namely, do our attempts to do good in the world really matter? I recognize the four women at the center of the narrative, each doing their well-intenti... moreoned best to both fulfill their souls and create a better world. Does one have to negate the other? Is it possible to do both at the same time? I ask myself that every day. In the end, their actions come from the right place, but that doesn't make their results--or the ending--any less messy. Portland native Drake paints our fair city as no other writer can. less
