review 1: The first thing that attracted me to this book was the illustration on the cover page- the movement, the depth, the color, the intensity of the little boy drawing a woolly-mammoth- it just grabbed me. This fictional story is told from the perspective of this little eight year old boy (our reader) living thirty thousand years ago. How would you show others the shapes you find when you look at the clouds or when you are gathering rocks? How can you convince them that the fire shadows come alive with animals from the land? No one believes him until one night he decides to trace the shadows he sees and all of the sudden everyone can see them. They come alive as if he has magic! And ever since then people have been drawing and creating magic. The illustrations were created ... moreusing acrylics, colored pencils, and pens.
review 2: Inspired by the cave paintings of horses and a rhinoceros found in southern France, the author/illustrator imagines what might have prompted those early drawings. Since a footprint from an eight-year-old was found nearby, Gerstein creates a story in which a young creative spirit sees images in the stones he collects, has vivid dreams, and then one day an encounter with a wooly mammoth leads to drawing its likeness on the cave wall. What seemed like magic 30,000 years ago seems just as magical today! The acrylic, pen and ink, and colored pencil illustrations take readers back in time even while making it clear that there are those among us with special artistic vision. I enjoyed how the artist's family and friends kept trying to get him to remain quiet so they could sleep. while an unusual topic for a picture book, everything works well here with humor and a nod to creativity at the same time. less
