review 1: I got a copy of A Magnetic Couple Dilemma from Amazon for my Kindle. It's the story of a priest, Esteban, who lives the life of the clergy after being asked to defend a fellow priest on a molestation case. He takes the opportunity to visit the husband of his not long dead best friend who died of complications of HIV.Javier returns home with Esteban and is introduced to a selection of supporting characters including Esteban's brother Raul, Javiers brother in law Diego and Esteban's extended clan of Spanish and Italian relatives. The relationship between Javier and Esteban occurs pretty quickly - which does happen in shorter stories - and Esteban's struggle with accepting his love for Javier is the centre point to the story. I have to admit I kept getting lost in which charac... moreter was which, and the storyline seemed a little choppy for me. The twist regarding Raul and Diego was a complete surprise and I have to admit whenever those two characters were on scene they seemed to steal the story out from under the two main characters. The story was a good one, and I enjoyed it. I thought it could have addressed a few issues more directly and that it kind of glossed over story lines that would have given the story a lot of depth and flavour. All in all though A Magnetic Couple Dilemma was enjoyable and if you're looking for light read about an older gay man finding his path and releasing the fear attached to it, you should enjoy it.
review 2: I loved this short story! Naaju managed to break my heart, make me cry, sigh and smile with her wonderful characters. Esteban a Jesuit Priest trapped by dynastic expectations. Mauricio, longtime friend of Estaban trying for forgiveness after his death. Raul, Esteban's brother also trapped by his family's expectations and bigotry on the other side of family legacy. Then there is the lovely sweet sheltered Javier, widowed and HIV positive at the age of 25. How Estaban breaks free of the shelter he has used his family's expectations for and Javier recovers from the loss of his husband and starts to live again and find his music is at times sweet, trying, tragic and sublime. Naaju Rorrete managed to create a wonderful world dealing with real people with tragic flaws and made them all the more beautiful for them. The author managed to bring in real issues such as HIV and a side story dealing with unplanned pregnancy and abortion while not getting on a soapbox or making light of the real impact these have on people. I felt as if I was included in the Hildago family not as a viewer but as part of the family and was so disappointed that the story ended.I sincerely hope Naaju continues the story of these people and am looking forward to reading more from her. less
