Millennium Series (#2): The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson

Oh. My. Goodness! This series just keeps getting better and better. At least this one wasn’t as sadistic as the last one. Because that was definitely a difficult read!

Continuing the 2018 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge. The prompt: A past Goodreads Choice Awards Winner. It won in 2009 in the “Best Mystery and Thriller” category. Which I think was very well-deserved!

This book continues two years after the events in the first book occurred. Lisbeth and Mikael are no longer on speaking terms. She wants absolutely nothing to do with him. Then, Lisbeth is accused of murdering not only her sadistic guardian, but two of Mikael’s colleagues as well. As the investigation unfolds, Lisbeth’s depressingly morbid history is exposed. We now know the whole truth behind who she is and what the heck happened to her as a child. And Mikael becomes convinced of her innocence and sets out to prove it.

And oh boy. What a history. Lisbeth was a victim of a cruel system. It’s no wonder she believes in her own form of justice. And is wary of sexist pigs. Who are everywhere in this book!

One thing that seemed superfluous to me, was Lisbeth’s vacation. She takes a year off and travels. Yes, we see her take up with a teenage lover and basically leave a wife-beating husband to die during a hurricane. But, it wasn’t really necessary. I didn’t see the point of it. We already knew she didn’t like women-hating men.

The first book was full of suspense. This one is as well. But I think the first book did it better. Maybe because Lisbeth was a mystery. And now she isn’t. She still is an incredibly fascinating character though. There’s no doubt about that. I can’t wait to see whether or not Camilla turns up in the next book.
