review 1: This is an interesting book. Jill has left her small town to take a job in Savannah with Bradley, her boss and her boyfriend. Jill’s Grandmother Pearl lives in Adams Grove and that is where Jill’s heart has always been. Pearl and Jill have a wonderfully close relationship because Pearl raised Jill and loved her every day of her life.Pearl has died and when Jill returns to Adams Grove, she finds there have been secrets going on with Pearl. There were break-ins at her home, she acquired a very large dog, and Garrett, Jill’s first love has been taking care of things at Pearl’s home for quite some time. This is a small town story of love and relationships. But, there is a mystery. Strange things continue at Pearl’s house while Jill is staying t... morehere. Clyde, the large dog does not appear to be the protector that was expected. The main characters, Jill and Garret are interesting. Garrett is a very nice man who was devoted to Pearl and is still in love with Jill. The ambivalence that Jill seems to have regarding Garrett is a not so attractive part of her character. I found it tiresome that she was hot and cold and very nasty to him when he was trying to comfort her because of the loss of her Grandmother. It seemed out of character for someone who respected and relied on the judgment of her Grandmother. There is a history that comes out that puts everything about Pearl in a new perspective. She had a life that Jill never knew. Pearl had a love of her life when she was young and he was very special in her life. Evidently his honor and integrity is what made Pearl believe in the good in people. This is a well written story. I think the plot could have been a little tighter and things could have gone more quickly. But, since this is the first in a series, the reader is introduced to the town and the people who live there. By the end of this story, we have the mystery solved, and relationships are building in the right directions. If you enjoy small town love stories with a mystery thrown in, this is a book you should read.
review 2: This was a southern sweet romance with a mystery included. It was well written and well plotted. The characters were believable and real. I loved Aunt Pearl and could feel why the townfolk all loved her so. I have felt the sorrow from losing someone so dear, so it was easy to relate to Jill and her grief at having lost her only remaining relative. When Jill returned to Adam's Grove it took her a while to get over her anger with the man who had broken her heart, Garrett Malloy. While I could understand, I wanted to shake her and scream at her to get over it!! It was so very obvious Jill and Malloy were meant to be.While living in Aunt Pearl's house, Jill stumbled upon a box of old love letters written between Pearl and JCP, and therein began the mystery...also the fear. Someone had been in the house and locked Jill in the hot attic, On such a hot day, she could have died if she hadn't had the sense of mind to escape as she did. And there were many more attemps of foul play as well.It was a very well written book and a good story. I did at times get lost in the conversation of who was speaking. I very much enjoyed this read. less
