review 1: It's hard to take seriously a book on books about places, travel, geography and adventure that includes three pages on the Shetland Islands and zero on Chicago. Hello? Devil in the White City, Boss, The Jungle, Carl Sandburg, Sara Paretsky? Second major flaw = she leaves out Into Thin Air from the best books on mountain climbing. Also, way too many mysteries included here... they could have been saved for another book.
review 2: Going to have to buy this one to constantly consult. I had to read this just to see if she extolled the same books I did. A really nice personal intro and then it's A to Z. After reaching the last Z I was hoping there would be a goodbye from her but alas there was none. Some of the authors she left out were: China- Pattison's Inspector... more Shan series; Turkey-Nadal's Inspector Ikmen; Brazil-Inspector Mario Silva series; Germany/Berlin- Bernhard Schlink's Gerhard Self mystery series. Can't get them all. As always I came away with some more books to add to my list. I particulary liked how she even included the out of print books. Hopefully in this age of digitization we'll have an easier time accessing these lost and forgotten gems. less
