review 1: There is no math, or english lessons at this high school, instead classes consist of saving the cat from a tree, costume designing, and superhero ethics. Leah Taymore is one of this students, and it is fascinating to see how they learn to become a hero, as well as learning to control their powers. For some reason, she is targeted with the intention of getting her expelled. She is unaware of this, but with help from her new friends she pulls herself together. Of great relevance are the ethical questions posed, and it turns out our heroine might have the right stuff after all.
review 2: Yes, I only picked this up because Naomi Novik's name is on the cover. Well, no, I also love superhero stories, and my daughter is a big fan of Yishan Li's art. It's a typical boa
... morerding school story in most ways, with a wide-eyed small-town girl (or at least from a small, friendly school) who's whisked away to a big, imposing school where she feels out of place and conspicuous. The reason she's there, however, is that she has a major superpower, and the superhero community is pushing for kids like her to get trained and take some of the responsibility for defending the world--enough to make anyone feel inadequate. It also turns out that the many mishaps that make her look incompetent aren't her fault, though readers are the only ones who know this. Novik is good at not making the characters seem stupid for not figuring out all the secrets, and she and Li collaborated on the design so it would seem more like manga and less like an illustrated novel. A nice bonus at the end was Novik's original notes on character appearance, with Li's comments about how and why they might be changed. Very entertaining, and I'd like to read more of the series. less

Not bad for what it is, but it felt too sweet and shoujo-y for me.
