review 1: This novel is set in Athens, Greece in the late 1960s during the time when a military junta has seized power. The author follows an extended family over a period of seven years starting from the night the government was overthrown, while flashing back to previous crises that besieged the country. It takes a look at the difference between how the younger generation reacts to the junta and how the older generation - who has experience a great deal of political unrest in the past - handles it. I enjoyed the author’s descriptions of the characters and how she weaved their stories throughout the novel. The political crisis seems to be more the backdrop in the story, and there doesn’t seem to be too strong a plot, while the family drama is the guiding force. Ultimately this ... morewas an opportunity for me to learn more about a time and a place that I really hadn’t any knowledge of aside from the beautiful pictures of travel magazines.
review 2: A nice read. The fifth star was withheld because I had hoped to read a little more about daily live in Greece during the days the military were in charge, from 1967 on. The story was focused on three women, a mother and her two daughters growing up from teenagers to young adults, all three taking part in the resistance, one way or another. Sometimes the love life took over a bit too much, but overall it was a really good book. less

Enjoyed the interplay of family within backdrop of Greek revolution circa 1960s-70s.
