review 1: This is one of those books where you know, or strongly suspect is going to end very badly. But you aren't sure which of the students is going to be the one to snap. I did like the book a lot. I found the story interesting, along with the backstory, and the students were well drawn. I spent a semester in Edinburgh, and I knew all the places that were mentioned - where Alex lived, where the school was, and I've attended a play at the Traverse Theatre. So that added an extra dimension to the story for me.
review 2: Natalie Hayne's debut novel is well-written. That's the best thing I can say. Her knowledge of Greek tragedies is obvious. Her character development is slack. Alex Morris retreats from a promising career in London to teach in an alternative school
... morein Edinburgh after her fiancé is tragically murdered. The novel focuses on a small group of teenagers that she is using drama therapy with to try and reach them. The Greek tragedies she uses in her class seem to reflect some of the actual drama going on in the kids lives. One of the students becomes obsessed with Alex and her life. It goes downhill from there. Alex is so consumed by her grief to even be likeable and is so full of self pity it's almost ridiculous. One of the students, Ricky has the potential to be an interesting and pivotal character but he is abruptly dropped halfway throughout. There's teally no mystery here and the book does not live up to its "psychological suspense" hype. less
