review 1: This novel reminded me a lot of the novel What Was She Thinking (Notes on a Scandal) by Zoe Heller. It has the same kind of feel to it, involving a young woman working at a school. It is about a young woman whose fiance has recently died while they were living together in London. She moves to Edinburgh, Scotland, where she had studied drama in college, and takes a job in a school for wayward youth run by her former mentor at the university. It is both about her using Greek tragedies in an attempt to reach and instruct a group of five teenagers who are particularly troubled and her coming to terms with her grief. There are some secrets that are revealed along the way, though no big surprises. You find out how her fiance died, what big crime had been committed that is re... moreferred to in the opening pages, and what involvement the main character shares in that crime. This could have been a sensational and lurid novel, but the author chooses to keep things realistic and in control, which I think makes for a much better read. The characters are well-fleshed out, the teaching scenes are believable and compelling, and the denouement is smart and very satisfying.
review 2: I enjoyed this book and it inspired me to start reading some Greek Tragedies. I think this is the sign of something worthwhile; I would never have picked up Antigone et. al. without reading this book.I enjoyed the pace; the reader is clued in gradually and I really felt for the protagonist. My only complaint is I felt mildly disappointed by the ending. It was as if the book was a couple of chapters too long. less
