review 1: I'm so surprised to see that most reviews of this book are so negative...I truly thought it was an excellent book. Note: I listened to the audio version. It's always a bit different to judge a book's literary style if I listened to the audio version instead of read the text. Not all books make good audiobooks, but this one does. I'm not sure if it's entirely the merit of the author or just the fact that JUSTINE EYRE's voice is so luscious, I can listen to her speaking in her calming English accent forever. I knew this is going to be a sad book. I mean, look at the premise, Jewish heroine from Vienna in the eve of WWII just screams HERE BE TRAGEDY to me. But the loses and sorrow of this book seems real to me. The heroine is likable to me, apparently an unpopular opinion. I s... moretarted out thinking that she is spoiled and insipid but I truly witnessed her change throughout the novel. HERE BE SPOILERSI also had a hunch that she's getting together with Mr.Rivers from the very beginning... There are more than enough foreshadowing to suggest that Mr.River's love for her has been constant and a lot more mature than Kit's. This is probably why I didn't go ew; I had perceived that the father harbored feelings for her from the very beginning.
review 2: I listened to this book and enjoyed the narrator but I didn't enjoy the story. I think that the ending was all wrong. The setting was a country manor in England during WWII and could have ended there OR it could have been about the novel in the viola. The two were successfully woven together right up until the last chapter which was a fitting ending to the story of the viola but had nothing to do with Tyneford. I guess I needed a different resolution, one that tied into the sense of place that the author spent hundreds of pages developing then abandoned. less
