review 1: This was a good book because of its use of playfully skimming serious topics but still get the massege across. This is shown in the part where Boyd Linny encounters a group of boys beating up a black man. The man Then procedes tells Boyd that him and is sons were kidnapped and sold into slavery. This shows some of the more serious tones that the play full looking novel brings into context. Moreover the way that the gutters are displayed rigedly and the dominance of dark colors bring out a darker more serious tone.
review 2: 3 1/2 stars. A tiny bounty hunter seeks out criminals in spite of (or perhaps because of?) their relationship and past treatment of him. I can see this as being a very healthy bit of fantasy escapism for every kid who has ever felt the injus... moretice of parental discipline (even when it is just) and neglect (even when it's only a matter of perception). There were little vignettes that broke up the story and seemed apropos of nothing. Maybe they were there to lighten the mood, but I found them a bit jarring--they sort of took me out of the story. However. I really liked the "oh so serious" Western flavor of the book. I'm curious what younger readers would make of it. less
