review 1: My kids were interested in this anime series and I watched it with them, the animated series only went through half the books. So we read the manga to find out how the story ended. This was my introduction to manga. Tohru Honda, a sweet high school girl who has lost her mom ends up living with members of the Sohma family which carry a curse. When hugged by a member of the opposite sex or under great stress they change into an animal of the chinese zodiac. The Sohma family is led by the abusive Akito and the zodiac members are especially bonded to him. After becoming close to them, Tohru hopes to find a way to break the curse. Though a little confusing sometimes to follow the manga style of storytelling, I ended up loving this series. It is often sweet and inspiring... more, sometimes dark and mysterious, sometimes romantic, and sometimes funny. The characters are intriguing and endearing. Loved it.
review 2: It's difficult to put Fruits Basket into words, as the manga's introduction states, " It doesn't fit into the ordinary manga categories, but then, it's not an ordinary manga. Take two parts drama, one part comedy, a spoonful of romance and a pinch of magic and you're partway there, but...something about Fruits Basket is special. What that special ingredient is, you'll have to discover for yourself." I found a friend in Fruits Basket, a ray of hope that things would get better. I suffered from depression and continue to deal with severe anxiety, but Fruits Basket was there when I needed it most, and I honestly believe without it, I wouldn't have survived.Obviously, I'm completely bias when I say it's my absolute favorite series, and if it were in novel form, it'd be my favorite book. I honestly believe even if you're not interested in anime or manga, this could be your one exception. You'll flip through the pages without even realizing you're close to the end and find yourself laughing and crying. Natsuki Takaya, the wonderful woman who not only created the series, but wrote and drew it, has stated she prefers making the reader face their own emotions rather than trying to get a cheap cry. If you read one manga in your life, read this one. Find a new friend, face your emotions, and as one of my closets friends said about the series, "It's a defining piece of art. It gives brokenness a voice and beauty in uncertainty." less
