review 1: I was glad I read this as I knew very little about the Naxalite movement in India or what life was like in Calcutta in the 1960s. However, it felt more like a history lesson than a narrative. I found the characters one dimensional and the plot very predictable. The writing was good, but for some reason I found it hard to really care about the fates of the main characters. I was disappointed because this book seemed to hold a lot of promise.
review 2: I am relieved to have managed to reach the end of the book. It felt like a long book. I liked the parts set in Majgeria/Belpahari. ... morether black and white. Actually except one white and a few grey characters, everyone seemed to be very black. All the bad qualities were heaped upon the Ghosh family in an unrelenting torrent. Still it is a good account of that time in history. less
