review 1: Outstanding first effort by Neely Tucker; I'm sure that I won't be the only one to draw comparisons to George Pelecanos. (Probably not a coincidence that several scenes in this book reminded me of "The Wire"). Fast paced and tightly written, the novel involves several subplots which end up intertwining in surprising ways by story's end. The main character is Sully Carter, a reporter who bears wounds of every kind from his time in Bosnia. He's terribly flawed, but has a sense of honor at his core which sets up most of this book's conflicts. I can't wait to see where Neely Tucker takes him next.

... mored made for an excellent weekend read. "The Ways of the Dead" lacks some of the noir atmosphere that Pelecanos evokes, which is not necessarily a bad thing, as it felt more genuine and straightforward. But the mystery itself is complex, and I enjoyed the angle of newsroom intrigue and the real-life constraints of investigative reporting. The main character, Sully, is a bit shallowly defined. He is an alcoholic war correspondent grieving the tragic death of a love interest, and that about sums it up. Maybe additional layers are being withheld for future novels? less
