review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The illustrations are just a jumping-off point to the heart of Shakespeare's time in London. The small tidbits of information were the most interesting - where the term "box office" came from, and what food was served in the Globe when you saw one of Shakespeare’s plays. An incredibly fascinating read, especially for history buffs and Shakespearian actors.
review 2: This seems to be a new genre: "x history in x objects." It is an interesting strategy to draw in people who are intimidated by long, involved histories. Each "object" gets a short chapter and lots of illustrations. But the history is solid, not fluff, even if brief. So MacGregor uses a Venetian goblet to discuss trade, the lure of the exotic, etc. I fo
